BEHIND THE SCENES: The Barefoot Bay Cottage Bathroom Renovations.

24 Aug 2022

When we began designing the Barefoot Bay Cottage we had a desire to create a home which had ultimate ‘holiday at home’ vibes. As a home which was to become a boutique accommodation property in Byron Bay we wanted to design something which would stand the test of time but also be our own interpretation of the quintessential Byron getaway. With tones and textures of the Byron hinterland featured in other areas of the home, the bathrooms became a space where we wanted to play with natural textures and create a soothing perfect for rejuvenation.  With some very tired existing bathrooms this called for a complete re-design and even relocation of the existing spaces!

The main bathroom was previously very lack lustre and unappealing, it really needed some work!  We started with creating a refined and pared back palette by adding natural tones and textures. We turned to Earp Bros to use their iconic timber look tiles - these look exactly like timber but are actually porcelain tiles. We choose the Minnesotta Plank tile in ‘Ash’ on the walls and the Moov tile with an antislip finish on the floor. These formed the perfect neutral backdrop for our fresh white accents of joinery, curtain, shutters, bath and basin, and our stunning vintage Indian buffet which became our beautiful vanity.

Using luxury tapware and fittings was a must for this home, the space needed to feel unapologetically luxurious and high quality. For this we turned to two of our favourites in the industry - Rogerseller and Apaiser. We chose the Sublime bath which is handcrafted from natural Australian minerals by Apaiser - it has the most sublime rich stone feel. This was pared with the Pinch Collection of tapware in ‘graphite’ designed by Rogerseller which feels incredible to the touch and looks even better.

Here is a rundown of the bath ware products we used:

We also needed the main bathroom to serve two purposes -it needed to be a luxurious bathing space but also have a fully functioning laundry and linen space. However, seeing a pile of laundry while you’re relaxing in the bath didn’t quite fit our “luxury” brief!  We needed to find a way of both softening the space but also cover up the utility. Using a floor to ceiling curtain was the perfect choice that also allowed us to accentuate the height of the ceilings and give a spa vibe to the room. We choose a white sheer curtain from the team at DIY Blinds which glides effortlessly on a custom curved track tucking in neatly beside the laundry area, which means when the laundry is in use the curtain can be tucked completely out of sight.

The ensuite bathroom in the master suite was a complicated space to approach as we were creating both a master bedroom and ensuite from the existing living room!  Due to the speed of the build we wanted to leave all of the existing windows and doors in place. The final solution was to tuck an open shower behind the wall hung robes which allowed us to keep the bathroom feeling open whilst also maintaining a feeling of privacy. We wanted to give this space a slightly different feel to the main bathroom. As it was open into the master suite, we wanted to add a little more detail and interest to the tiling and chose Tanzania Nut in “Ice” from Earp Bros to provide a complimentary finish to the sage green wall colour from Haymes (“Gulf”). We continued with the same range of tapware and bathware in this space as given the smaller nature of the Cottage, it was important to maintain consistency throughout the home.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
