Meet the Maker: Crossing Threads
Meet the Artists: Lauren and Kass Hernandez
Lauren and Kass, Australian-born sisters of Filipino heritage, helm Crossing Threads® from their studio on Wangal and Gadigal Land in Sydney. Their journey into weaving began in 2015 with a beginner's workshop, sparking a passion that transformed into a thriving artistic practice. Lauren's background in advertising and design complements Kass's expertise in finance and project delivery, creating a harmonious blend of creativity and precision in their collaborative works.
The Essence of Crossing Threads®
At the heart of Crossing Threads® lies the ethos: "Create, Connect, Cross Over." Their handwoven pieces are more than decorative art; they are tactile narratives that explore personal experiences, familial bonds, and the natural world. Utilizing materials like Australian Merino wool, plant-based fibres, upcycled fabrics, and foraged items, Lauren and Kass craft intricate textures and forms that evoke emotion and introspection.
Their signature 'interknot' technique—intertwining hand-knotted chains of varying textures—has become a hallmark of their work, symbolizing the interconnectedness of human experiences.
