Inside Sussex Tapware
A Masterclass in Australian Craftsmanship and Innovation
At The Designory, we’re passionate about showcasing brands that embody exceptional design, sustainability, and local craftsmanship. Our recent visit to Sussex Taps' Melbourne headquarters and factory reaffirmed our admiration for this family-owned business that has been redefining Australian tapware since 1991.
A Legacy of Precision and Passion
Founded by Dutch watchmaker and jeweller Nicolaas Johannes van Putten, Sussex began as a venture into tap manufacturing, leveraging Nick's meticulous attention to detail. Today, his daughter Vanessa Katsanevakis and her husband George continue this legacy, steering the company with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and design excellence.
The Heart of Australian Manufacturing
Sussex stands out as one of the few Australian tapware manufacturers that operates its own foundry. This vertical integration allows them to oversee every step of the production process—from design and casting to machining and finishing—ensuring unparalleled quality and consistency.
Their commitment to sustainability is evident in their use of recycled brass, processed in a closed-loop system within their Melbourne facility. Additionally, Sussex has invested in LUXPVD® technology, offering a carbon-neutral finishing process that enhances durability and aesthetic appeal.

A Workspace Reflecting Brand Values
The recently renovated Sussex headquarters, designed by Biasol, mirrors the brand's dedication to craftsmanship and family heritage. Natural timbers, brass accents, and curated displays of historical photographs create an environment that celebrates both tradition and modernity.
Innovation Meets Customisation
Under Vanessa and George's leadership, Sussex has embraced customisation, offering a diverse range of finishes and styles to cater to individual tastes. Their products are not only aesthetically pleasing but also built to last, making them a favourite among architects and designers seeking quality and sustainability.
Experience the Craftsmanship
Our tour of the Sussex factory was a testament to the brand's dedication to excellence. From the precision of robotic engraving to the meticulous hand-polishing of each component, every step reflects a commitment to quality. It's clear that at Sussex, tapware is not just a product—it's a craft.
