Designing Dream Bathrooms at Barefoot Bay Villa

Bathrooms today are no longer just utilitarian zones — they're becoming central to the home’s style story. They’re spaces for rest, rejuvenation and indulgence — and if designed right, they can be as beautiful as they are functional.

At The Barefoot Bay Villa, we had the joy of designing five distinct bathroom spaces — each with their own layout, challenges, and opportunities. Here’s how we approached them, the elements we prioritised, and how you can apply the same thinking to your own project.

Quality Always Comes First

Whether it's a kitchen, bathroom, or living space — investing in quality will never let you down. At Barefoot Bay Villa, we were both designer and client, so we made selections from brands we know and trust for performance, beauty, and longevity.

Here’s what we used:

  • Tiles: Earp Bros – their expansive collection of handcrafted and natural-toned tiles is a go-to for all our client and in-house projects.

  • Baths & Basins: Apaiser – made from a blend of Australian minerals, their bathware offers an almost stone-like softness and beautifully organic shapes.

  • Tapware: Rogerseller – we selected the Eccentric Collection in brushed nickel for its simplicity and timelessness.

  • Vanities: Loughlin Furniture – handcrafted in American Oak, these vanities brought the warmth and tactility every bathroom needs.

  • Mirrors & Shower Screens: Stegbar – fully customised to reflect the repeated curved design language of the home.

Each brand brought craftsmanship, quality, and a sense of grounded luxury — all key to the design story of the villa.

Come Back to Nature

Bathrooms should feel connected to nature — not only for aesthetics but for a sense of calm and grounding. Natural materials and textures were essential in achieving this at the Villa.

  • Loughlin’s timber vanities were made to perfectly suit each space.

  • Earp Bros' Old White tiles in the master ensuite reminded us of "fingers through sand" — perfect for this Byron Bay home.

  • Apaiser’s lotus bath and basin in the main bathroom have a soft, stone-like quality that feels organic and refined.

  • Don’t underestimate the impact of a simple indoor plant or hanging vine — great for air quality, and an instant nature hit.

Design for Functionality

Good looks only go so far — bathrooms must function flawlessly. A few of our must-haves:

  • Ventilation: We used IXL Neotastic vents and the VELUX Active skylight in the main bathroom to automatically open based on heat and humidity — perfect for managing moisture in the space.

  • Lighting: In addition to downlights and natural windows, we included LED-backlit mirrors from Stegbar for excellent, flattering light when using the vanity.

Repetition for Cohesion

To keep all five bathroom zones feeling connected, we repeated a palette of sand tones, greys, terracotta, and timber. The Eccentric Tapware collection from Rogerseller was used across every bathroom, tying the spaces together with subtle consistency.

Show Some Personality

Bathrooms are a great place to have a little fun. In the pink and green bedrooms, we extended the colour palette into the ensuite using Earp Bros’ Nazari tiles in complementary hues. The result? Joyful, bold, and totally memorable.

Letting a bathroom reflect the personality of the space it serves is a beautiful way to bring the home’s design to life.

Let the Light In

Natural light is everything in a bathroom. We worked with Quantum Windows & Doors and Trend Windows to achieve just the right balance of privacy and openness:

  • Downstairs: Full-height fixed windows paired with Breezway louvres create a sense of showering in nature.

  • Upstairs: High windows allow sunlight to stream in without compromising privacy.

  • All windows and doors were finished in Textura black — a tactile, matte finish that elevates the details.

If new windows aren’t possible in your reno, a VELUX skylight can completely transform the light quality in the space.

The Wrap-Up

Designing the bathrooms at Barefoot Bay Villa was about more than just tapware and tiles — it was about creating spaces that felt restful, natural, functional and personal.

The key?

  • Choose quality pieces that stand the test of time

  • Bring in natural elements and textures

  • Design with function in mind

  • Repeat key materials for cohesion

  • And don’t forget to show a little personality!
